Update: Prison & Pupil Packs from N America
We are delighted to update you on progress with our plans to ship Prison & Pupil packs from N America. During his recent visit to Ontario, Stephen was able to revive earlier discussions with ACCTS which had stalled due to the pandemic. We will give further detail in due course, but we are hopeful of […]
A very BIG Thank You
We want to say Thank You to Naomi Steele who recently took the initiative and arranged a coffee morning in support of the work in Malawi. Although they were too shy to appear on camera, several dozen local Christian ladies came to enjoy Naomi’s fantastic hospitality. On the day, over £1000 was raised through the […]
Latest from the Children’s Work at Saidi
We are really encouraged to see the increasing interest at the children’s work at Saidi.

Stephen will be with at Manvers Hall, Bath on 10th December to encourage younger Christians to become involved in missionary work.
Latest shipment of calendars & hygiene packs
500,000 Gospel calendars and 2400 Prison Hygiene packs will soon be on their way to Malawi.
Trustees’ workshop
As previously mentioned, we weren’t able to have this weeks’ annual trustees’ workshop as planned. However, some of us met together for a couple of days earlier this week to discuss some of the topics which had been on our agenda. We appreciated having Anna with us for these sessions, when we discussed Safeguarding and […]
Latest progress at Saidi
With each visit, I am amazed at the on-site progress at Saidi. The Lord has been so good! Recently, we have been working on a new office and printing room, as well as a maintenance workshop and store. Although it wasn’t possible to get these completed in the run-up to MGO 2022, we were thankful […]
MGO 2022 – reflecting on the Lord’s goodness
As the clock runs down on MGO 2022, we reflect upon the Lord’s goodness over the past two weeks. We always expect big things of MGO, and this year exceeded expectations. The team has been fantastic, with a healthy mix of mature believers, and others with much less experience. Some are Seed Sowers veterans of […]
Countdown to MGO
We have been waiting a long time but now the countdown to MGO is T-2 weeks! Initially we planned to have a series of 5 Children’s Day Camps, but we learned a few weeks ago that the school term has been extended due to earlier Covid disruption. Accordingly, we have adapted the plan to have […]
Saidi Latest (In Pictures)
As you can see from the pictures, Goodson and his crew have been working apace at Saidi, with the imminence of MGO adding a little urgency. Now that the Msasa has been re-roofed, the focus of the past few weeks has been on getting the Print Room/Office nearer to completion. Goodson & the team have […]
MGO 2022 Schedule
Here is our itinerary in case you are interested in following & praying for MGO day by day. Like everything in Malawi, it’s subject to change at short notice !
Progress of Maintenance Workshop & Print Room
Work continues apace on various aspects of the project at Saidi. The Office (temporary apartment) & Print room has been roofed and first fix electrical and plumbing work done. The “scratch coat” will be plastered next week and should be ready for installation of windows and doors at the start of the following week (DV), […]
Msasa Re-roofing project
It’s such a thrill to see work substantially complete on the msasa re-roofing project. The refurbished structure was put to good use for the first Sunday Gospel Meeting at Saidi. We extend a heartfelt Thank You to individuals and assemblies who supported us with funds to cover the cost of this project. Surprisingly, it is […]
The South Wind Blew
Acts 28:13 records how after many winds of adversity, at last the south wind blew, speeding Paul and his companions toward their desired destination. Several recent trips to Malawi had their share of difficulty and disappointment (all in the Lord’s purpose). However, I am thankful that, apart from a 24 hour delay in Frankfurt on […]
TRUSTEES’ REPORT – Year Ended 30 September 2021
The activities of the Trust continued to be seriously affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic for a significant portion of the year. Nevertheless, we are grateful that as travel restrictions began to ease, it was possible for Stephen to visit Malawi twice to review operations there, first in May and again in August. Stephen’s visit […]
A Buzz about Bible Time
There’s a real buzz in the air today as we have just received the very first complete Nthawi ya Baibilo (Chichewa, Bible Time) series back from the designer. This represents months of long, often tedious work by Anna, Wati and the whole translation team, and is another massive step forward in the work of the […]
2023 Calendar & Tract Printing
Our 2023 Calendar is in the final design stages. We thank Brian Chalmers Design for their help another year. We think Brian has done a very nice job, don’t you? We’ve also just heard from Revival Movement (RM) that they have already printed 3 pallets of tracts for us, and are able to help further […]
God gave me this work… so I keep moving forward
“I keep moving forward”. So says Bro Harrison Saidi (coincidentally, the name of our village) who called by today. He came to collect Gospel Literature for meetings taking place at Mayaka, some 2-3 hours away by bicycle. I first met Bro Harrison in February 2016, and was moved by his dedication to the spread of […]
Building Work currently underway at Saidi
We have much to thank the Lord for as we review progress of the building work at Saidi so far. Thanks to the hard work of the building team, and brother Goodson’s diligent oversight, a lot has been accomplished since we started less than two years ago. Current Phase of building work The following details […]
Saidi Development Project – progress so far
Although we recently had to make adjustments to our schedule for the Saidi Development Project, we are still encouraged by the progress made so far. We are grateful for Brother Goodson’s diligence as he has supervised the work, and for the energy and skill of the building team who have done so much with limited […]
Adjustments to building schedule
Following Stephen & Gail’s recent visit to Malawi, we have decided to adjust the building project schedule at Saidi. The deteriorating economic situation in Malawi means that we must plan for the possibility of an upsurge in crime. Consequently we have decided that we need to prioritise improving security above additional building work. Necessary Immediate […]
Stephen & Gail’s latest visit to Malawi
I love Malawi. I’ll take every opportunity to visit Malawi. But I hope I never have to visit again in the circumstances that made this present trip necessary. As regular readers know, sister Anna recently suffered a very traumatic burglary and assault at her home. The trustees agreed unanimously that Gail and I should travel […]
The forgotten humanitarian crisis – an opportunity in the Gospel
We all continue to be moved by the needless loss of life and terrible humanitarian crisis occurring in Ukraine. We give thanks for faithful believers ministering to those in need. However, we ought not to forget the untold millions of the world’s poor who are born into insufferable hardship. They live every day of their […]
Empowering a volunteer literature distributor with 300 bed mats for prison
You may remember that George Green is one of our volunteer literature distributors. Many felt moved by his story of travelling 5 hours on a borrowed bicycle to be supplied with Gospel literature. In 2019, Brother George and his family were seriously affected by Cyclone Idai, losing their home and crops. SALT helped with their […]
Work for the Lord in Malawi – Reflections on the past 20 years
Unbelievable. But true. 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of our first experience of life and work for the Lord in Malawi. From Heaven to our hearts We were young and inexperienced, but Gail and I were both feeling the unmistakeable weight of a burden from the Lord. Not particularly for Malawi, at first, but each […]
The Nitty-Gritty of Translation Work
Recently Stephen posted about Nthawi ya Baibulo, the Chichewa version of Bible Time. We were greatly encouraged to receive the first fully designed lessons! Though there remains a significant amount of work, we are excited about the potential of the curriculum. Since translation and publishing work is a big part of what we do at […]
Update on the Saidi Building Project
I had the perfect opportunity to review progress at the Saidi Building Project during my recent 3-week visit to Malawi. As you may recall, in January a lightning strike and fire seriously damaged the msasa we built for the children’s work at Saidi. This really discouraged us at the time as the msasa was still […]
MGO 2022 Fully Subscribed
After a final flurry of activity this week, MGO 2022 is now fully subscribed. It looks like we are going to have our biggest team ever, with 22 participants signed up, plus our local volunteers, Lord willing. As in previous years, the team will have an international flavour, with participants from USA, Canada/Mexico, Scotland, England […]
Meet Yamikani Issa – A volunteer distributor from Liwonde
Brother Harold and sister Anna caught up with brother Yamikani Issa from Liwonde, who has been distributing literature since 2015. Below is what he had to say about what motivates him to distribute gospel literature. (Note: the answers have been lightly edited to improve clarity.) Q. What motivates you to be involved in this ministry […]
The Warm Heart of Africa – Malawi
Malawians refer to their beautiful little country as “The Warm Heart of Africa” – and I heartily agree. Since Gail, Philip and I relocated from Malawi to Northern Ireland in 2011, I have made more return visits than I can remember. When I am away, I definitely miss my family and the fellowship of saints […]
The Most Significant Step Forward in Malawi in 20 years?
Without exaggerating, this could prove to be the most significant step forward in the 20 years I’ve been involved in Malawi. Earlier this week, we received the very first Nthawi ya Baibulo (Chichewa Bible Time) lessons from the designer for final checking. I confess that I teared up when I saw them! I started the […]
Muslim Youth Appreciate Gift of Gospel Literature
We love when our literature distributors tell us how they appreciate the materials we supply to them. Anna just shared this letter of thanks which she received from a volunteer in Machinga. He who works to bring the Gospel to Muslim youth. We have edited it very slightly to make it a little more readable. […]
Evolution of SALT’s Gospel Literature Ministry in Malawi
As “L” is at the heart of “SALT” so Gospel Literature Ministry is at the heart of what SALT does in Malawi. By the grace of God, over the past 10 years we have been able to publish and distribute around 14 Million items of Gospel Literature across the length and breadth of the country. […]
Dzaleka skills training project
During a recent visit, we met with the women participating in the skills training project at Dzaleka Refugee Camp to better understand how the project is progressing and the impact they feel it will have in their lives. We met with 26 women who are participating in the project which is training them in tailoring, […]
Weather-related Gospel Literature distribution difficulties in Malawi
We are so thankful for the arrival and discharge of a large consignment of Gospel Literature – 1,000,000 Gospel Calendars and 1,5000,000 Gospel Tracts. A large portion of the Gospel Tracts are brand new designs for Malawi. Now the real work begins with bulk distribution by commercial courier to our various Regional Storage Depots in […]
Tropical Storm Ana
It’s likely that over the past few days you’ve heard mention of Tropical Storm Ana – the cyclone that swept through southern Africa earlier this week, leaving a tremendous amount of destruction in its wake. Malawi was one of the countries that was affected. For over twenty-four hours on Monday and Tuesday, there was a […]

Encouragement from past Conferences
On the morning after the fire, Brother Harold sent this message of encouragement. We searched out some photos and video from the conference he refers to. It’s so encouraging to know that the Lord has been working in people’s lives.
A Sad Day at Saidi
We had hoped to be celebrating the Lord’s goodness in the progress of the project at Saidi, but 3 January turned out to be a sad day at Saidi. A lightning strike mid-afternoon set the structure of the Msasa alight, and before long it was fully ablaze, despite the torrential rain. Seven people were inside, […]
We are so optimistic!
Harold’s optimism and enthusiasm is infectious. Hear more from Harold, Goodson and others during our live event on 3 January @ 7.30pm GMT
Harold explains how the life of Paul motivates and challenges him
Brother Harold shares how from the start of his Christian life he was motivated by the life of the Apostle Paul to go and preach the Gospel. Hear more from Brother Harold at our upcoming online New Year meeting on 3 Jan 2022: The Great Commission – An uncompleted task

Goodson tells how he was saved
In this short video, Brother Goodson tells us how he was convicted about his sin, but was saved and had all his sins forgiven. Goodson is a valuable member of the SALT team in Malawi. He has a real interest in reaching his local community with the Gospel, and is excellent in Children’s ministry.
Harold Makawa shares how he came to know the Lord
Brother Harold is a key member of the SALT team in Malawi. In this short video he tells the heart-warming story of how he came to know the Lord while still at school.
Re-drilling borehole
Our first water borehole has proved to be a big disappointment, yielding only a few hundred litres per day. Fortunately it was guaranteed for 1 year and the drillers are back today to have another go. Pray that it will be a success this time. We’ll have a little bit of work to move the […]
The Anatomy of a School Visit
Perhaps you’ve been wondering, as you read about our work in schools, what, precisely, a visit entails. We start by contacting the head of the school to ask if we can come to speak with the students. Without exception we have been welcomed into every school that we have approached. The door is wide open!On the […]
Hygiene pack ministry
We have just taken delivery of a supply of cartons for the hygiene pack ministry. If you are interested in helping assemble hygiene packs, please get in touch with us. We are grateful for all help with this important work. Find out about packing
Training additional Bible Time teachers at Dzaleka
We were very encouraged to see the enthusiasm for the Swahili Bible Time lessons we’ve been sending into the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. Brother William took the initiative to train a further 17 teachers from various churches in the camp. Many of the children at Dzaleka are very vulnerable, and it is a joy to facilitate […]
Children’s group in the Msasa wa Ana
It’s so thrilling to see the new Msasa and the recently made benches being put to good use. Pray that many of these children and adults will come to a real understanding of the Gospel and come to know the Lord as their Saviour.
Preparations for Open Day
Preparations are underway for the Open Day at Saidi on 20 November. The builders have started to construct a kitchen and the carpenters have begun to make wooden benches for the guests to sit on. We are really happy that Norris, one of the older members of the Child Headed Households group, is helping with […]
Container office conversion underway
It’s just impossible to keep up with the pace of progress at Saidi. We just received these photographs of today’s work on the container office and finishing work on the roof. Thanks again to everyone who has helped make this possible, either through your prayers or your sacrifice. We hope shortly to begin sheeting and […]
This is the Lord’s doing
We had a great online meeting with the team in Malawi when we got first-hand accounts of the following areas of the work: Goodson – Building project & local History outreach Anna – Child-Headed Households & School visits Wati – Dzaleka, Skills Development program & Literature, Swahili Bible Time, chiChewa Bible Time translation Harold – […]
Planning, planning, planning!
SALT Trustees have got together in Somerset for a second week-long series of meetings to review progress so far and to plan and strategize for the future development of the work. We first did this in August 2020 and found the time extremely useful. We have seen the Lord richly bless the work of SALT […]
Zatsala pang’ono
Work on roofing the container bay is so close to completion. We expect to begin the conversion of the middle container next week. It will be fitted out for use as offices for translation work and Bible Time ministry. Thanks again to everyone whose generosity has made this possible. You can see a pictorial history […]
Planning for Saidi Open Day
The team met yesterday to plan for our first big event at Saidi. On 20th November we plan to invite members of the various Bible study groups, builders and tradesmen working on the site, local dignitaries and others for an open day to hear a Gospel presentation and learn more about our plans. It’s hoped […]
3.6 Million items despatched
A very big thank you to Samuel and all our friends at Revival Movement / Every Home Crusade for helping us with this further large shipment of Gospel Literature for Malawi, despatched yesterday. 1 Million 2022 Gospel calendars and 2.6 Million Gospel Tracts represents a huge sacrifice on the part of the Lord’s people. Our […]
20,000 Exercise Books Delivered
Yesterday we received 20,000 exercise books at SALT offices in Saidi, Thondwe. The books will be distributed to students in primary and secondary schools. During the school visits, each student hears a short Gospel presentation and receives a gift of an exercise book. Exercise books are highly prized as schools are generally very poorly resourced. […]
Great progress on the container bay roof
The first heavy rains fell earlier this week, so the roof doesn’t come a minute too early. Once the IBR sheets go on, we will start the conversion of the middle container to office accommodation
Daniel in the Msasa
Just received from Brother Goodson this afternoon. The children at Saidi were learning about Daniel in the dzenje la mikango – the den of lions. So thrilling to see the msasa bring used for this vital work. Thanks to everyone whose generosity has helped make this possible.
Maize Storage for feeding program
We are planning to start our feeding program at Saidi very shortly. As the building works have scaled up we’ve had to add more storage for maize and other food-stuffs. It’s been really difficult to acquire decent containers due to the current world shipping situation, so prices have gone up and available quality gone down. […]
New (to us) Wheels
It’s taken a long time, but we are now the happy owners and possessors of a new (to us) 3T truck. It’s planned to use this on the construction site and for literature distribution to help relieve our serious logistical problems. Praise God for this provision.
Disappointment
Disappointed this morning as thieves attacked the property overnight and stole 20 fence poles. We need to consider how to prevent further loss or more serious breaches of the security, keeping in mind that we don’t want to erect barriers between ourselves and the community.
Schools Ministry – 20,000 Exercise Books
Anna & Harold continue their regular, weekly school visits. Each student hears a short Gospel presentation and receives a gift of a an Exercise Book. These are highly prized as schools are generally very poorly resourced. Many students sit on the bare floor as there are insufficient desks and chairs. The exercise books have a […]
Progress on Feeding Station & Msasa wa Ana (Children’s Shelter)
It’s really exciting to see progress on the Msasa wa Ana. Until now the children have been meeting in the shade of the storage containers, but these will obviously provide no shelter once the oncoming rainy season arrives. Work began to dig the foundation in late August and progressed well with the pouring of the […]
Mission accomplished
Thanks to all who have supported us prayerfully and practically so far in this. There’s been a LOT of sand, stone and cement gone into it, and this (and the other progress made recently) wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of the Lord’s people. Thank you!
Flora’s Eggs – and a whole lot more
What a blessing to be back with the brothers and sisters in Malawi! I arrived in time to join the monthly get together of workers at Goodson’s house at the Saidi project site. It’s a joy to see how well the team is gelling. It’s obvious that the Lord of the Harvest has brought His […]
News Update – June 2021
Brother Stephen has just returned from a most encouraging visit to Malawi – his first since February 2020. The main reasons for this trip were (1) to help Anna (Vallance) get settled into her new home and environment, (2) to “eyeball” the project site at Saidi for the first time (Bros. Harold & Goodson had […]
Impression of site development at Saidi
Here’s a 3d impression of how we think the site at Saidi might develop over the next couple of years, Lord willing. Please pray with us about this development project. Further details here.

Update From Dzaleka
A couple of months back the authorities in Malawi gave the green light for schools to resume after several months of Coronavirus lockdown. Although the pupils and staff at COOM academy welcomed this news, the extra conditions concerning social distancing necessary because of Covid-19 presented an impossible burden for them. Thanks to the generosity of […]
Latest consignment of prison packs. Thanks everyone
Our latest consignment will shortly be on its way. Big thank you to everyone who contributed, even during lockdown.
Raising the profile of Chaplaincy
Earlier this year SALT hosted a two-day seminar with key members of the Malawi Prison Service Chaplaincy team. It became apparent that the importance of chaplaincy as a distinct role within the service is not fully understood, and we undertook to start working with the team to change that. One small step on this journey […]
The first literature they’ve received!
Karonga is almost as far north as you can go in Malawi – about 12 hours from our Southern Region base. Today, brother Raphael visited the prison there to leave some basic PPE and some Gospel literature. Here is his moving report of the visit: Karonga Prison has no any literature according to my chat […]
Sewing masks complete
Raphael reports that the task of producing all 2250 masks is now complete and distribution of these and the soap and pails to the remaining prisons in Northern Region will happen this week. Each inmate will receive Gospel literature along with the hygiene items, so please pray that the Lord will use this to the […]
Covid-19 PPE distribution begins
We again express our gratitude to Raphael and his team who have begun distributing the items purchased through the kindness of the Lord’s people. Pails, soap and masks have already been distributed in Chitipa and work is underway to sew masks for the remaining five prisons in the region. Each inmate has also received a […]
Prison Covid-19 Update
A situation which needs your prayers The government in Malawi has just re-introduced prevention measures designed to slow the progress of the virus – many of them measures which were lifted a month or two back to facilitate the Presidential election. This U-turn has caused considerable confusion about the issue. Conditions inside the jails are […]
Making great progress
Goodson says, “Lero tawelukila pamepa” – this is where we got to when we knocked off today. It’s so encouraging to see the job moving forward. Of course, the next stage will necessarily be slower, but this is a great start.
A good week’s work
Ok, so it’s a very basic building, but this is great progress in one week from a standing start.
Akumanga mwansanga!
The builders expect to finish the foundation tomorrow and to begin work on the structure of the house on Monday (DV) So wish I was there – but then work would only be half as quick 🙂
Zipangizo zikufika
“The materials are arriving” It’s all back-breaking work as bricks and sand all have to be man handled – no fork lifts or telescopic handlers here. Please continue to remember this in your prayers.
Still feeding hungry mouths
Although frustrated not to be able to be in Malawi as we normally would this time of year, we are encouraged by pictures and reports from the camp at Dzaleka. Sadly, one little girl passed away a few weeks ago, but there are still over 90 children being fed daily, and it is our privilege […]
Groundbreaking ceremony??
Without flurry or fanfare the work at Saidi begins. Today the builders have started to dig the foundations for the caretaker’s house which will provide security at the site as the project proceeds. No mechanical diggers or earth moving equipment, just a khasu and a lot of elbow grease. We will value your prayerful support […]
A Start at Saidi – if not as we had hoped for!
The Lord knows how to keep us grounded. Although the Trustees would have loved to have been present in Malawi to oversee the start of the development of the site at Saidi, that has not been possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the need to finally relocate our storage facilities means we cannot afford […]
Anna Vallance to join the work in Malawi
I feel a little like Jude – eager to write about one thing, but constrained by the Holy Spirit through circumstances to write about another. However, unlike Jude, it is a very happy matter which now takes precedence. Initially my intention was just to write enclosing a copy of a recent letter that some of […]
Encouraging update regarding development land in Malawi
At this time of year we would usually be making final preparations for Malawi Gospel Outreach (MGO). Although Coronavirus has brought many frustrating limitations, we want to share with you a recent major encouragement in the work in Malawi. In our January newsletter we mentioned that we were in negotiations to purchase a plot of […]
June 2020 Newsletter
Like everyone else, the work of the Trust has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, but we are grateful to the Lord that none of the directors or local volunteers have so-far contracted the illness. Pandemic and Politics Mercifully, the number of reported cases in Malawi is still low, although there is justifiable concern […]
SALT 2020-Q1 News Update
Our latest News Update is now available. Please keep an eye on the website for further ad-hoc items.
SALT BITES Annual Review
We published our Annual Review a few weeks ago. You may view it here if you haven’t already done so.
A few pics from our recent Chaplaincy Training seminar
The above images show the Prison Officers’ sleeping quarters and the Training Centre kitchen.
Delights at Dedza
It’s always a joy to stop at Dedza Pottery – one of my favourite spots, anywhere – to break the journey between Lilongwe and the south. The air is cool, they do the best Chicken Curry for miles around, and we’ve been enjoying Dedza Delights with great Malawian coffee since first we came to the […]
Prison Chaplaincy Training
We spent two days at the Malawi Prison Service Training Centre at Mapanga, considering the important role of chaplaincy in the well-being of prisoners and reduction of reoffending. Although well-established within the prison culture in the UK, chaplaincy is still in its infancy in Malawi. It was a privilege to spend a couple of days […]
Dzaleka Refugee Camp Update
Earlier this month we had the opportunity to pay a brief visit to see the ongoing work at Dzaleka. Jim & I were so grateful that the ongoing unrest in Malawi abated enough to enable us to make a brief visit to see the work of COOM which we have been privileged to support a […]
Hygiene Pack Shipment Good to Go
We put the final touches to our latest consignment of Prison Hygiene Packs this afternoon. 7 pallets with 133 cartons (approx 3000 packs) will be picked up tomorrow and taken to the premises of Revival Movement Association to be consolidated with the second part of our literature shipment, and onward to Malawi this weekend. If […]
MGO 2020

If you are interested in participating in MGO 2020, please sign up using the form below. As in previous years there will be accommodation and subsistence expenses – full details to follow. Each […]
Happy children this Christmas
I just received these photos of the children at Dzaleka enjoying a good meal thanks, at least in part, to the kindness of. so many Christians who are giving to help feed them.
Remember this Christmas
We wish you all a very Happy Christmas. This is a good time to remember the many who are not blessed with the material things we take for granted. This dear old lady was just so grateful when I met her a few days ago that she would be getting a roof – we’ve been […]
A New Motorcycle for Goodson
3 years ago a young Canadian sister’s sacrifice enabled us to purchase a small, Chinese motorcycle for brother Goodson. It was “cheap and cheerful”, but has proved to be an amazing blessing to the work. Not surprisingly, frequent use on poor dirt roads had begun to take its toll, and despite Goodson’s best efforts to […]
Interested in volunteering your medical / dental / related skills?
Prisoner welfare in Malawi suffers greatly due to resource constraints, with clinics under-funded and under-staffed. Encouraged by the great response to our annual MGO effort, SALT is considering the possibility of assembling a small team of health practitioners to conduct a series of mobile clinics within some of the prisons that we operate in. We […]
Post-MGO
Irving & Sheryl proceeded to Chitokoloki, Zambia from Malawi and have been visiting with Shawn & Rhonda Markle and family. They have been visiting some local Christians to give some food relief. Safe home, guys!
An MGO veteran reflects
This trip to Malawi has been very precious in so many ways. It was a real joy to serve the Lord in a small way with this MGO team in Malawi. What a wonderful opportunity to tell precious souls of the love of our Heavenly Father. We have so much to praise the Lord for. […]
MG (O)ver
Each successive MGO generates its own special memories and MGO 2019 has been no exception. We’ve had an outstanding team of different, but complementary personalities, all of whom have made a very positive contribution to the overall effectiveness of this outreach. Many have made significant sacrifices of time, energy and expense to be with us, […]
I didn’t expect to cry
MGO has been challenging and encouraging to me, both of which are personal answers to prayer! Visiting the prison today (Tues 13th) was emotional for me for many reasons, but I didn’t expect to actually cry and I did a few times during the gospel message that Jim shared with the the men and women […]
“When were you hungry…?”
(This is a true story, but the identity of the individuals involved has been deliberately obscured for their protection.) We had a really moving experience at the refugee camp. We were visiting a refugee orphanage run by a Christian couple within the camp. Wow! How the Lord is using the husband and wife in such […]
Sunday Sadness
This morning (11 August) we went to a small church about 1/2 hr away. Stephen was asked to give ministry to the believers, and a local elder was responsible to preach the Gospel. It was very disappointing to hear him preach that salvation is by continuing to do good works – going against everything our […]
The Prison & The Pottery
On our way to Dedza prison today we saw a large truck that had just rolled over. The people of the village thought it was their lucky day as it was full of beer and they were going crazy removing all unbroken bottles, free of charge! For some distance after the accident we saw people […]
If only someone will come…
Whenever I come to Malawi, what strikes me is the thousands of children who have an open ear for the gospel. There is so much potential, if only someone will come and pour the word of God into their precious hearts.
Devil Street
This morning we did a big distribution of gospel texts near the bus depot in Devil Street, Lilongwe. It was very busy. I had a guy wanting to marry me, when I told him I was already married he asked me if I had a sister, I told him she was already married too!! Quite […]
MGO 2019 Update
I really must apologise. MGO 2019 is more than half-way through, and I still haven’t posted an update. I’m not sure whether that’s a reflection of the hotter-than-usual weather, the more manic-than-usual environment that is Lilongwe, or just that I’m getting too long in the tooth for this stuff 🙂 We are so thankful to […]
Cyclone Idai Relief Update
When Cyclone Idai hit Malawi and neighbouring countries in March this year, experience had taught us that the real problems would manifest themselves in the months, rather than days that followed. These events have a “long tail”. SALT’s Trustees want to be careful to further the overall objects of the Trust, and not to distract […]
Going to press again
As we go to press on half a million 2020 Gospel Calendars, we express our thanks to Brian Chalmers for his help with the artwork this year. Although many people associate SALT with the work in Malawian prisons, and the distribution of hygiene packs, our primary focus always has been, and always will be, publication […]
MGO 2019: T-1 month
It’s exactly one month, Lord willing, until we hope to hit the streets of Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, for Seed Sowers distribution and Gospel preaching. We are looking forward to being joined by a great team of volunteers from UK, USA and Canada. In the meantime, please pray for the Lord’s help as we make the […]
Cyclone relief update
In the immediate aftermath of the cyclone there was a good response from various NGOs, providing emergency food and shelter and other basic necessities. Knowing from experience that this problem would have a “long tail”, we didn’t rush to act, apart from intervening in a few particularly urgent cases. Instead, we have been monitoring the […]

A good problem to have
It’s only 8 months since we took delivery of 1,000,000 Gospel tracts. What a thrill to receive this message earlier today… “Hi brother, I have more calls for tracts request because of this Easter… …we need to be thinking of printing more tracts as we are running low very quickly. I just came from Liwonde […]
Labourers Together
Very grateful to the ladies at Bridge of Weir for their efforts preparing Prison Hygiene packs. May the Lord richly bless you for your kindness and fellowship in this valuable work.
So send I you
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. John 20:21 KJV https://bible.com/bible/1/jhn.20.21.KJV The Christian’s mission in the world is authorised ( actually, mandated) by Chist himself, and energized by the Holy Spirit. How are we getting on at fulfilling it?
Children’s work in Thondwe
Brother Goodson says, “Osayiwala kupephelera gulu la ana a kuthondwe” – don’t forget to pray for the Children’s group at Thondwe.
Compassion!
https://fl.vu/i9CLx The Saviour’s compassion for his sorrowing companions moved him to tears of genuine, tender sympathy. As those dearly loved by him, are we also moved by the desperate need of those among whom we have been left as witnesses in this world?
Cast thy bread upon the waters…
The directors of SALT had a thrilling visit to the premises of Revival Movement today, where we witnessed again the monumental efforts of those dear believers to spread the Gospel in so many parts of the world. We produced around 1.5 million items during 2018, and with the cooperation of Revival Movement we are looking […]
Help for Brother Green
SALT is pleased to be helping Green rent temporary accommodation following the collapse of his humble home, and have supplied some food relief to get the family through the next few weeks.
BBC News: Cyclone Idai: ‘Massive disaster’ in Mozambique and Zimbabwe
“This is shaping up to be one of the worst weather-related disasters ever to hit the southern hemisphere,”
Prison Hygiene Pack Volunteers
The total number of cartons packed / being packed is enough for around 3000 Hygiene Packs – a considerable effort on the part of everyone involved. We have every expectation that these packs will have a great impact upon those who receive them
Prison Pack Update
Many thanks to the Christians at Hope Hall, Lesmahagow, from who we received a pallet of 8 completed cartons. Together with those received from the Christians at Bloomfied Gospel Hall & Ebenezer Gospel Hall, that brings to 55 the total ready to ship. If you would like to be part of this valuable ministry, there […]
Thank you!
£50/day will provide around 100 people with basic meals and shelter.

“A good tool in evangelism”
For the second year running we supplied a number of Gospel calendars in Afrikaans / English to assemblies in the Republic of South Africa. 10,000 calendars were delivered in Johannesburg and I was glad to hear that they had travelled many km to where this text came from a few days ago: I’ve put up […]
“The demand is very overwhelming”
I received this text from brother Harold earlier today – he was forwarding it from one of our many distributors in the field: It’s amazing how people responded to the tracts you shared with me. People really need something to read. Our culture is not a reading culture and the tract creates a starting point […]
Wing tips by proxy
I’m not an aviation buff, but I’m posting this wing tips picture as this is the flight Jim and I should have been taking home together. Jim’s famed for his wing tips photos 🙂 As everyone who’s been following Jim’s Malawi Minutes knows, he had to leave prematurely when Janet took very unwell on our […]

Prison doors swing open!
Sadly, brother Jim will have to cut his trip short and will return home tomorrow as Janet has been taken unwell. We are so thankful to the Lord that, notwithstanding this unfortunate turn of events, we were able to accomplish a major objective of the trip when we met the management of the Malawi Prison […]

Malawi Minutes Introduction
Thought maybe some very personal and immediate insights and impressions might help folks understand why the work in Malawi is so close to my heart. Planning to post one a day as I am able during this trip.
Helping Prison Reformatory Schools
17 prisons in Malawi have Reformatory Schools where prisoners can study towards completing their Primary of Secondary education. These schools are desperately under-resourced and are taught by prisoners who receive small privileges as incentives to volunteer. We are developing a program in conjunction with the Prison Education Co-ordinators to supply much-needed resources and have recently […]
Official Launch
We are pleased to officially launch SALT. Please feel free to distribute the following details:
Our first packing evening
Many thanks to everyone who showed up for our first packing evening. The turnout exceeded our expectations and we quickly got through the supplies of toiletries we had gathered for the purpose. A special thank you to the sisters at Ebenezer GH for the lovely refreshments at the close. Around 6 assemblies were represented to […]
