You may remember that George Green is one of our volunteer literature distributors. Many felt moved by his story of travelling 5 hours on a borrowed bicycle to be supplied with Gospel literature.
In 2019, Brother George and his family were seriously affected by Cyclone Idai, losing their home and crops. SALT helped with their housing needs and some food relief.
Since then, life has continued to be difficult for brother George. He makes his living sewing bed mats (mphasa) but with the present economic conditions people are struggling to buy mats and many just sleep on the bare floor. Although there is a market for his mats near the lake, he has lacked the money to buy materials and transport his products.
On a recent visit to one of the prisons in the Southern Region, Jim & Stephen were given access to one of the sleeping quarters. It was heartbreaking to see the harsh conditions in which inmates are living. The Prison authorities struggle for resources. The cells are desperately over-crowded, and the men have at best a single, thin blanket for a little comfort and heat at night.
We decided to “kill two birds with one stone”. Brother George has the skills to help himself, but no market. The prisoners need what George can make, so we asked George to make a bed mat for each prisoner. Voila!

Please pray for the many volunteers who struggle like George. And pray for the prisoners who receive the mats – that they will consider the kindness that provided them and remember God’s provision for their even greater need. God even loves convicted criminals.
