The Reserve Bank of Malawi just announced a massive 25% overnight currency devaluation. The Malawi Kwacha has lost 90% of its value in two decades!
Please pray for our Malawian brothers and sisters who are already really struggling and will feel this really hard. An average agricultural workers daily wage was worth around only £1.25 / $1.50 prior to this devaluation. It’s now worth 25% less!
There are desperately difficult days ahead. 85% of Malawians are subsistence farmers, but the price of 1 bag of fertilizer is well a month’s average income – before you’ve bought anyting to live on, visited a doctor, or paid school fees! Hunger looms!
